I think it's true Arlo and Janis once bickered more than they do now, but I'm also sure their relationship always has had an obvious underpinning of love and affection. That's why I was always puzzled by the occasional letter to the effect, "Why don't they just go ahead and get divorced?" I figure people who wrote those letters either have perfect marriages, or they've never been married.
